WHO releases policy brief on good governance for prison health in the 21st century

At the WHO EURO Network Meeting on Prisons and Health in London on 15 October, WHO/Europe and UNODC jointly launched the document, Good governance for prison health in the 21st century. A policy brief on the organization of prison health.” The document discusses the disproportionate rates of communicable and non-communicable diseases and mental health problems that exist with European Union member-states.

The report comes to the following conclusions:

  • The health and well-being of prisoners is a whole-of-government responsibility.
  • The most effective way to protect the health of prisoners is that health ministries provide health care services in prisons and advocate healthy prison conditions
