Cara Bergen (2016)

Cara Bergen’s CCPHE research involvement is focused on (a) the long-term impact of mother-child units in prisons and (b) the effectiveness of peer mentoring in helping previously incarcerated men achieve their health goals. Cara is a UBC MD candidate (2019) with a B.Sc. from UBC (2015).

Sarah is a final year medical student from the Hull York Medical School, England, here on her medical elective in Prison Health and Forensic Psychiatry. She is participating in the research project on the effectiveness of peer mentoring in helping previously incarcerated men achieve their health goals.

Combining her interests in preventative medicine and oncology, Sandra Hosseini’s CCPHE research project focused on cancer prevention and screening workshops directed towards those with previous incarceration experience.

Alida Fernhout (2012)

MPH Practicum Student

Alida Fernhout received her Masters of Public Health from UBC. She completed her MPH Practicum with CCPHE where she conducted a qualitative analysis of the health forums held in 2005 & 2006 in a women’s prison (ACCW).

Summer Medical Student
As a CCPHE summer student, James researched housing and homelessness issues amongst incarcerated women. James completed his degree in Medicine at UBC with a Bachelor of Health Sciences Honours from McMaster University

Visiting Medical Student
A visiting medical student from The Netherlands, Daan worked with the CCPHE as a Research Intern on the Participatory Preventive Health Project. He completed both his Masters and Bachelor of Medicine at VU University Amsterdam.
